Scope matters more than page count alone
A five-page website can be complicated if it includes custom calculations, integrations or a difficult migration, while a larger informational site can be efficient when pages share a consistent structure. Useful estimates consider unique templates, content preparation, forms, integrations, data and testing rather than multiplying a price by the number of URLs.
Content is another variable. If the business supplies approved copy and current photographs, the project differs from one requiring research, writing, photography and migration of years of existing material.
Platform and functionality change the budget
A standard CMS can reduce custom development when its publishing model fits the project. Ecommerce adds product data, payments, tax and shipping configuration. Custom applications can add authentication, databases, APIs, administrative tools and testing of business rules.
Ongoing expenses may include hosting, domain renewal, licensed software, maintenance and third-party services. Ask which costs are recurring and which are included only during development.
Compare proposals on the same requirements
A low estimate and a high estimate may describe different projects. One proposal might include content migration, redirects, testing and post-launch support while another assumes the client will handle them. Request a written scope that identifies responsibilities and exclusions.
Avoid choosing solely on a promised ranking or an unusually large feature list. A smaller project that clearly solves the business requirement can provide more value than an ambitious build that becomes difficult to maintain.
Ask how changes outside the original scope will be priced. Fixed-price projects still need a method for handling new requirements, while hourly projects benefit from priorities and spending limits. A deposit schedule should correspond to understandable milestones. The cheapest proposal can become expensive if essential migration, content or maintenance work was omitted, so compare the complete first-year ownership picture where possible.
